Towards a More Peaceful World
At htP, our intention is that children will care for all people, animals, and materials in our school, and by extension, the world. We rely on the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a method for fostering connection through the use of language, as a way to realize this intention. Our staff guides children toward behavior that meets the most needs at the least cost. Some of the techniques we use are: modeling the desired behavior, redirection, routines and conflict mediation.
In the conflict mediation process, children express their feelings and what matters to them while being listened to compassionately by the teacher, and then switch to take the role of listener while their playmate gets a turn to speak. Out of these conversations, mutually beneficial solutions often arise.
