At htP, our approach to building emotional literacy in our students is informed by the knowledge we glean from UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center and the field of Positive Psychology. Each month we focus on a single emotional literacy topic such as Optimism, Creativity, or Kindness. We learn about the month's topic by integrating three practices into the month's curriculum. For example, when we are focusing on Optimism we practice praising children according to a “growth mindset”, and praise them based on effort rather than achievements. While we put our attention on a particular theme each month, we continue to use the practices of the prior months in our interactions, so by the end of the year we are using all of the practices. Children also get a chance to deepen and reinforce their learning by encountering the themes again in their second year of school.
